The Specialism

Science

The twin specialisms of Science and Technology will form the main part of the students' everyday experiences, and they will learn about scientific and technological processes in every subject of the curriculum. Teachers will make use of features of both subjects and students will be encouraged to use skills such as designing, planning, experimenting and making, trialling and evaluating on a daily basis. New technologies will be used in every subject area and students will gain 21st-century skills that they can go on to use in their adult lives and the world of work.

In Science sessions, teachers will emphasise hands-on experimentation, collaborative analysis and evidence-based decision-making. Students will be able to make the most of their talents and gain confidence as they work on projects, competitions and presentations. Through Science, the students will be able to strengthen their ability to work in a team and in competitive situations.

The Technology strand will help students gain the essential skills needed for success in our fast-changing technological society. As well as preparing more able students for high-level technological, design and engineering careers the curriculum will provide a firm basis for the vocational and academic pathways on offer at the Academy.

At Key Stage 3 students will be encouraged to participate in a range of activities aimed at improving their competence, and in learning more about a range of exciting Technology led career possibilities. At Key Stages 4 and 5 the students will be offered a range of qualifications including GCSEs, Diplomas, BTECs, A/S and A-Levels, relating Science and Technology to the worlds of business, science and commerce. A wide choice of routes to Further and Higher Education, apprenticeships and work with training will also be on offer.

ICT will be taught as a communications, study and problem-solving tool, helping students to develop creative, design, graphical, organisational and practical skills. In addition, ICT will link the community of students, parents and the Academy.

The Academy's unique Science and Technology Leaders programme will help identify and support the future generation of scientists and technologists. Students will be identified for the programme through a series of practical sessions in Years 7 and 8. The programme's main aim is to encourage talented and interested students to explore Science as a career. These students will be able to work with Science professionals on problem-solving activities and special projects, including Science and Technology in areas such as sport, medical sciences, engineering and construction, food and textiles, and environmental issues.
