Designing the new Academy
Key Dates of the programme with the Bedford Academy team
Session 1,
The Challenge Day (28 January 2009 - 10am to 2.30pm)
At the University of Northampton
Pupil clients and student designers meet at the University for a tour and to discuss design issues in Schools, facilitated by the Sorrell Foundation. This session will also involve client teams from two other schools.
Session 2
Researching your school (Monday 9 February – 10am to 11am)
At John Bunyan Upper School
The Joinedupdesign for Academies team visit the school with the student designers to discuss the final 10 common issues with the pupil client team. They also take photographs to record how things are at the school now.
Session 3
The visit (Wednesday 11 February – 10.30am to 1.30pm)
At RAF Museum, Hendon
The pupil client team and student designers go on an outing to an inspiring location. This is planned by the student designers but supported by the Sorrell Foundation and their college or university tutors.
Session 4
Creative discussion 1 (Wednesday 25 February – 10am to 11am)
At John Bunyan Upper School
For the students from University of Northampton to present back their design scheme to our students for review, challenge and debate.
Session 5
Creative discussion 2 (Wednesday 4 March - 10am to 11am)
At John Bunyan Upper School
To share provisional design ideas.
Session 6
Launch Day (Thursday 12 March - 10am to 4.30pm)
At Somerset House, London
Joinedupdesign Launch Day, where our students will meet other Academy teams on the same programme and be able to see the designs of other groups from previous years. The day is also for sponsors, project managers, architects, school principals, mentors and other interested parties.
The day will include a short guided tour of London’s Southbank, designed to inspire the pupils’ thinking about rebuilt and refurbished environments, facilitated mood board making workshops and initial presentations from the pupil client teams. Transport will be provided.
Session 7
Wednesday 18 March (10am to 12noon)
At John Bunyan Upper School
A workshop at the school where the pupil clients develop the visual aspect of the brief with their designers. They develop a combination of photographs of how it is now, research images and design ideas from the student designers and other design references collaged together with annotation for each of the 15 Common Issues
Session 8
Wednesday 25 March (10.15am to 11.15am)
At John Bunyan Upper School
Design students from University of Northampton present their design and models of the school students’ ideas.
Session 9
Thursday 11 June from 5pm to 7pm
At the University of Northampton
The University student designers present their concept ideas to an audience of friends, parents, school staff, academy sponsors, local education authority and other partners. Transport will be provided.
Session 10
Wednesday 17 June from 10am to 4.30pm
At Somerset House, London
Final event, hosted by the Sorrell Foundation, whereby our students will be facilitated to present the final outcomes to a wide audience (very similar to the event on 12 March but bigger) and celebrate the completion of the process.
