Bedford Academy Teacher Inspires the Next Generation of Women in DIY

Students at Bedford Academy recently had the opportunity to take part in a unique hands-on workshop led by one of their own teachers, who is encouraging more women to pick up power tools and build confidence in DIY.

Teacher and home renovation content creator Laura Deller, known online as @houseprojectuk, has built a large social media following by sharing honest insights into renovating homes and learning practical building skills. Passionate about challenging stereotypes around women in the trades, she has recently launched her first book, NAILED IT!, which aims to inspire more women to develop practical DIY skills and confidence with tools.

To celebrate the launch of the book, Laura has started a series of workshops called “Power Hours”, where women are given the opportunity to learn how to safely use power tools and tackle DIY projects themselves.

The tour began at Bedford Academy, where a group of female students were invited to take part in the very first session. During the workshop, students learned the basics of using tools such as drills and drivers while gaining practical advice on simple home improvement tasks.

The event was also filmed by the BBC, who visited the school to capture the session as part of a special news segment airing around Mother’s Day, highlighting inspiring women who are encouraging others to learn new skills.

Laura said the aim of the workshops is to help break down barriers and show that practical skills are for everyone.

“DIY and home improvement can feel intimidating if you’ve never been shown how to use the tools. I want women and girls to know that these are skills anyone can learn. Once you understand the basics, it opens up a whole world of possibilities.”

The workshop reflects the school’s commitment to providing opportunities that build confidence, develop practical skills and encourage students to challenge traditional stereotypes around careers and industries.

Bedford Academy is proud to have supported the launch of the first Power Hour workshop and looks forward to seeing the positive impact Laura’s work will have as the tour continues across the country.
